 Historical, cultural and folkloristic tour of Basilicata
(8 days – 7 nights)
 
 

Day 1:

Departure from .. at .. (hr). Free lunch enroute to Basilicata. Arrival in MATERA, check in at the reserved hotel, welcome cocktail, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2:

Archivio APT BasilicataBreakfast at the hotel and departure to VENOSA and CASTELLI FEDERICIANI. In the morning guided tour of Venosa, famous for its latin poet, Quinto Orazio Flacco. Visit of the pre – Norman Trinity Abbey, the Roman thermal Bath, the Cathedral dedicated to S. Andrea and the Castle in Umberto I square. After lunch we’ll continue the tour visiting MELFI and LAGOPESOLE, both famous for the “Federiciani Castles”; the first one important for the “Costitutiones Melfitanae”, the second one for the hunting with the falcon. Dinner and overnight stay in Matera.

Day 3:

(C) Copyright Resolvis S.r.l.Breakfast at the hotel. Full day in MATERA, famous for its “SASSI”, listed in the International Word Heritage (UNESCO) since 1993. The “Sassi” represent the symbol of a peasent life and culture and also a wonderful example of urban architecture. The great part of the old Matera has been carved into the calcareous rock. Along the tour we’ll visit: rock hewn churches, wine cellars and a typical cave – dwelling.. the so called “Casa – Grotta” that shows inside the old forniture that people were used to have. After having a walk in the city center, we’ll have our lunch in a typical local restaurant of the Sassi. In the afternoon we’ll have a look of the Sassi from the famous Balcony of the “Murgia Timone Belvedere” in a natural and protected area.    Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.  

Day 4:

Breakfast at the hotel and departure to DOLOMITI LUCANE; we’ll reach the amazing center of PIETRAPERTOSA, the highest town in this region. Transfer to TRICARICO to have a walk in historical center, very famous for the Arabic district called “Rabatana and Saracena” and for the production of a special sausage called “ soppressata” for the typical shape it has. Lunch in a typical local restaurant. In the afternoon we’ll drive to MONTESCAGLIOSO, to enjoy a walk through its picturesque town center and catch sight of the outstanding Abbey dedicated to S. Michele Arcangelo firt burned at the latter Middle Age, then rebuilt at the end of the XV century.  Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5:

Breakfast and check out at the hotel for our transfer to the “Magna Grecia” coast. METAPONTO is  a very interesting Archeological Site, corresponding to its ancient Greek colony settlement. Our tour includes exploring remains dating back to the town’s origins (7th cent. B.C.), as well as Apollo Lykaios’ Temple (in the ancient public Agora) built over the remains of a previous circle – shaped public building named Ekklesiasterion. Our tour will also include visiting the National Museum and the nearby Tavole Palatine (15 out of the 32 columns of a 6th century’s Doric Temple dedicated to Hera). Departure to POLICORO and lunch in a local hotel/restaurant.    In the afternoon we’ll visit the “Siritide National Museum”, in the heart of the ancient Heraclea. Departure to MARATEA, check in at reserved hotel, welcome cocktail, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6:

We’ll follow on walk the route: “Colle Ruggio – Piano Ruggio – Belvedere del Malvento” (about 3 km.). We’ll enjoy the typical landscape with flowers and plants, above all the well known “Pino Loricato”, tree. Lunch in a restaurant in Rotonda. Walking tour in the town center. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7:

Archivio APT BasilicataBreakfast at the hotel. Departure to RIVELLO to visit the Monastery dedicated to S. Antonio of the XV century. Very interesting is the painting of the “Ultima Cena” on the wall of the refettory. It is possible to see the exhibition of the “Greece in the Occident”. Return to MARATEA where we’ll have lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon climbing of the San Biagio Mountain, where we find the statue of Jesus Christ  and we can also enjoy the beautiful landscape. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8:

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Maratea to ...
