Conventions in Matera

Convention Department Manager: Sara Minardi

A convention in Matera is a great opportunity to spend time in a fascinating atmosphere, in an unusual and captivating location where guests can breathe centuries of history.  Our objective, in fact, is the utilization of the most beautiful and prestigious historical sites present in the city.

The Sassi, separate yet naturally connective (of cave-houses, splendid buildings of various eras, terracing, labyrinthine streets, Byzantine and Greco-Latin monasteries and churches with their iconographic cycles that fresco the iconostasi and the walls), that link the ancient neighborhoods with the urban reality dominating from the “plain” (with the splendor of Romanesque and Baroque churches, noble palaces and monasteries and convents), and the Murgico Plateau permeated from the depths of the gorges of the rocky precipices (with the immense spaces lined with dry-stone walls, with archaic water-gathering systems and with traces of trenched villages from the Neolithic era), induce one to contemplation and to amazement for the perfect fusion of the beauty of nature and of the man-made, that destroys the artificial confines between that which is nature and that which is human creation.

CONVENTION LOCATIONS:
Rocky Churches - Monasteries – Historic Buildings

S. Pietro Barisano

It is one of the most interesting Churches located in the Sassi di Matera carved entirely from the tuff block. The interior is made up of 3 naves separated by quadrangular pillars which are connected by arches.  The central nave can accommodate approximately eighty participants.   Externally, in the charming little square is a bell tower with more stories and areas that can be used for refreshments.

Casa del Pellegrino

Behind the Cathedral, the complex that was founded in Matera in 1594 takes its name from the district in the town with the same name.  Law n. 270 of 1997 allowed for the complete renovation of the interior, with the intention of providing a reception house for Jubilee pilgrims.  The project was obligated to maintain the distinctiveness and peculiarity of living in the mystic simplicity of large vaulted spaces.  It offers a main hall that can contain up to 140 people and various small rooms for side meetings, as well as areas for working meals and gala dinners in a splendid location that overlooks the Murgico Plateau and the Sassi di Matera.  The building also has 7 double rooms.

Palazzo Lanfranchi

Built to create a seminary according to the wishes of Bishop Vincenzo Lanfranchi, it was inaugurated in 1672.   After the unification of Italy the palace was used as a high school where Giovanni Pascoli taught between 1882 and 1884.  Today it is the site of the Basilicata Department of Monuments and Other Treasures as well as housing the Carlo Levi Foundation that exhibits numerous works by Turinese artists such as the famous painting “Lucania 61”.  The Palace is also home to the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art.  It offers a Convention Hall that seats around 120.

Palazzo dell'Annunziata

In 1734 the engineer, Vito Valentino di Bitonto drew up an extensive plan for the construction of this building containing a ground floor plus two upper stories.  The building was completed by Mauro Manieri di Nardò, one of the central characters of the Barocco Leccese.  The library was re-opened to the public May 14, 1998.  The convention room can hold up to 120 people.  Exhibition halls are also available along with areas for coffee-breaks.

Auditorium "Raffaele Gervasio"

Annexed to the music conservatory, it seats 400 people.  It was the first musical institution founded in Basilicata. Initially part of the Bari Conservatory in 1965, it became autonomous in 1969.  It is dedicated to Egidio Romualdo Duni, Matera musician at the heart of French culture in the 1700s.  The structure is part of an unique urban historic context from which can be admired the fascinating and evocative Sassi scenery.  Annexed to the music conservatory, it seats 400 people.

LOCATIONS FOR CORDIAL MEETINGS AND GALA DINNERS:
Terraces on the Sassi -  Historic Homes  - Ancient Fortified Manors

Convicinio di Sant'Antonio

A single lobby and entrance hall for four crypts belonging to diverse secular congregations.  The area in front of the four churches was perhaps meant for the custodian.  Following the abandonment of the Order (18th Century), the churches were used as cellars, displaying the tubs for grape pressing, as well as the recessed apses to hold the barrels.

Palazzo Bernardini

Palazzo Bernardini once Ferrau, was built between the 15th and 16th centuries.  Access is by way of the Piazza Sedile or Maggiore, a characteristic small square in the historic center.  The building, all together, portrays markedly Renaissance characteristics.  The magnificence of the interior is particularly adapted to special occasions such as gala dinners.

Torre Spagnola

It was originally built for defense and as a watchtower during the Aragonese period (15th century).  Afterwards, around the fortress, new buildings arose that were meant for agricultural and pastoral activities.  The rural complex is made up of a central courtyard, overlooking which are the master’s quarters on the higher floors, and work and storage areas on the lower levels.  The manor was later fortified to make it more difficult for the brigands to loot.
