Arrival in Matera, meeting with the guide and guided tour of the Sassi, the ancient city fully carved in Limestone Rock, which in 1993 was the first site in southern Italy have been registered to the World Heritage List UNESCO.
Walk in the Sasso Caveoso the most beautiful and oldest part of the Sassi remained true over time.
During the walk you will visit the following structures:
Cave house typically furnished with period furniture and tools to get an accurate idea of how it was organized farming life in the houses of the Sassi, described by Carlo Levi in the book “Christ Stopped at Eboli.”
Historical Cellar of 1700: This structure is constituted by two local dug one inside the other, on two different levels. It is of significant interest due to the presence of ancient “millstones” in which it was crushed grapes.
Rock church carved into the rock: this church is a tangible demonstration of what we call “architecture to the negative”: dug and not built. The church has changed its intended use over time: its appearance as it was used – after the departure of the monks – as a peasant house

The afternoon continues with the laboratory of bread :
At the end of the walk the guide will bring the students at one of the oldest bakeries in the city where the masters bakers will explain the various processing stages of the famous bread of Matera , revealing the secrets that make it so tasty and refined.
Cost of the workshop : € 7.00 per participant.
The fee includes the explanation of the processing of the bread , the lab , cooking and tasting.
