The Altopiano delle Murge (Italian for “plateau of the Murge”) is a karst topographic plateau of rectangular shape in southern Italy. The itinerary begins from the covered cistern located on the property of the Strada nearby Masseria Irene which is still inhabited. From here, a beaten path leads to arable soils behind the Gravina of Matera.
Going up the canyon towards north and walking through the maquis shrubland, visitors can reach crypts spread out along the Gravina and hidden in the middle of the vegetation.

Moving with the bus to visit the Cappella Sisitina in the South of Italy: Crypt of the Original Sin.

At a few kilometres from Matera, along the ancient Appian way, in one of the ravines that criss-cross the plateau of the Murgia, you find one of the most fascinating places in Southern Italy: The Crypt of the Original Sin, also known as the “Sistin Chapel” of the rupestrian wall painting.

In a rocky hollow overlooking the limestone cliff, the masterly hand of the “Painter of The Flowers of Matera” has narrated scenes from the Old and New Testament in a cycle of frescoes dating back to the 9th century. A. D.. of the rupestrian wall painting
