Sicily’s “Sun Island”, its flavours and wineries (8 days-7 nights)

Day
1: |
Arrival at Catania’s airport, transfer to and check in at the
reserved hotel in the Aci Reale district. Afternoon
departure to Taormina, one of Sicily’s most appreciated
sites. Stopping along Mazzarò sea promenade, we’ll board the
local cableway to reach the town, enjoying a panoramic view over
its picturesque gulf and the Ionian sea. Visit of Taormina’s
Greek Theatre originally built during the Hellenic age and later
rebuilt by Romans. Free time. Dinner in a local restaurant.
Return to the hotel and overnight stay. |

Day 2: |
Breakfast at the hotel and departure to Mount Etna, the
biggest active vulcano in Europe. On site, we’ll also enjoy
tasting local wines at Cantina del Murgo, located in Santa
Venerina’s countryside along the South-Eastern sides of Etna,
500 m above sea level. Its vineyards spread over 25 hectares to
produce excellent red and white DOC wines (name of origin
controlled) as well as a tasty “spumante” (sparkling wine).
Traditional lunch with typical cuisine in the Cantina’s
restaurant. Afternoon departure towards Riviera dei Ciclopi
(Cyclopes’ Coastline) . Along this picturesque
coastline we’ll visit the baroque town Aci Reale,
Ulysses’ Aci Trezza, the firshermen’s village Aci
Castello and its Norman Castle ruins. Return to the hotel,
dinner and overnight stay. |

Day 3: |
Breakfast, check out from the hotel and departure to
South-Western Sicily. Visit of Ragusa, also known as “the
white province capital”, listed in the International World
Heritage (UNESCO) for being one of Sicily’s most important
baroque towns. Like in a painting, its countryside is a real
triumph of bright, lively colours (red, yellow, orange) from a
multitude of trees (olives, carobs and almonds) and twisting
vines. Our city tour begins with visiting one of its renowned
wineries to taste local wines “Nero d’Avola” and “Cerasuolo di
Vittoria”, while also enjoying a traditional lunch with local
products. Afternoon trip to Ragusa Ibla,
corresponding to the town’s old centre and built at the top of a
low hill overlooking a suggestive valley. Transfer to the
reserved hotel, check in, dinner and overnight stay. |

Day 4: |
Breakfast, check out from the hotel and departure to Caltagirone,
listed in the International World Heritage (UNESCO) for its Baroque town
centre. It is also renowned for its skilful ceramic and Nativities
workshops. Local wine tasting and typical lunch in one of its
characteristic town’s wineries. Free afternoon. Transfer to the reserved
hotel, check in, dinner and overnight stay. |

Day
5: |
Breakfast, check out from the hotel and departure to Piazza Armerina
for a guided tour of “Villa Romana del Casale”,
one of the most interesting archaeological sites in Italy. The
impressive mosaics covering almost the entire surface of the Villa’s
pavements, are among the very few extraordinary examples still
surviving. Lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon departure to
Agrigento for a guided tour through the Greek incomparable ruins of
the so-called Valley of Temples. The sight of these huge
Temples in the middle of Agrigento’s almond tree countryside is
absolutely amazing! Transfer to the reserved hotel, check in, dinner and
overnight stay. |

Day 6: |
Breakfast, check out from the hotel and departure to Marsala,
mostly known for its excellent and harmonious wine. Our
city tour includes visiting the Provincial Archaeological
Museum Baglio Anselmi housing ship remains dating back to the
Punic age, and one of the traditional town’s wineries for local
wines tasting. Lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon visit of
the Medieval town centre of Erice, perched on a
suggestive hilltop located at 750 metres above sea level.
The town is renowned for its “pipes festival” and local
products, including majolica and Arabian-styled carpets.
Transfer to Palermo, check in at the reserved hotel,
dinner and overnight stay. |

Day 7: |
Breakfast at the hotel and departure to Casteldaccia to visit a
well-known winery and taste its production of wines. Return to
Palermo and lunch at the hotel. Afternoon walk around Sicily’s
capital to admire its main monuments and streets. Dinner at the hotel
and overnight stay. |

Day 8: |
Breakfast, check out from the hotel and departure to Monreale, to
visit its Norman Cathedral and the nearby Cloisters. Built under the
rule of King William II, between 1172 and 1176, the town’s Cathedral
boasts impressive Byzantine-styled mosaics decorating its walls with one
of the most comprehensive Old and New Testament cycles. At the end of
the visit, transfer to the airport for return flights… “arrivederci”!!! |
